You've submitted countless applications over dozens of websites but your inbox is still sounding like crickets. With a difficult job market, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to hear back from employers.
If your job search is failing, here are some tips to give you applications the attention they deserve:
1- Tailor your application
If you're throwing the same generic CV and cover letter at every job posting, that could be why you're not hearing back. If your application elements aren't tailored to the job posting you're applying for, you might not make it passed the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to be seen by the hiring manager. And, once the hiring manager has hundreds of applications, yours might not stand out. It's important to incorporate the keywords from the posting into your CV and cover letter.
2- CV Format
Your format matters! As much as pretty CVs are creative and unique, stick to a simple black and white design with no tables or text boxes as these will confuse the ATS and will likely result in your application being automatically rejected. Start with your name and contact info followed by a summary/objective section. After this, list some core competencies before diving into your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first). At the end, add your education and any other qualifications that may be helpful. Make sure your CV is no longer than 2-3 pages.
3- What did you accomplish?
It's easy to make your CV look like a copy and pasted job description, but that's not what recruiters are looking for. If you've listed nothing but what you've done, the recruiter has nothing to prove these. Instead, list what you accomplished. If you have quantifiable metrics, for example, "Increased sales and revenue by 15% last quarter," then definitely add those! If you don't have metrics, then no worries! List your accomplishments and let the recruiter know that you're dedicated to what you do.
4- Use resources
There are so many resources out there to help you out. From here at FAC3 to Indeed and LinkedIn, there's never a shortage of resources and advice out there. One approach can be to reach out to someone who is an HR/hiring position in your dream industry and have them review your CV. They can provide solid advice to help you tailor and customise your application to be seen by the right people. Be ready to have to rework it a lot to keep it in great shape.
